Bentonville Battlefield
The Battle of Bentonville was the last major fight between the North and South in the Civil War. It was also the largest battle fought in North Carolina during the war. North Carolina was one of the last "unconquered" Confederate States. After Wilmington was lost, the Winlmington and Weldon Railroad continued to transport what few supplies were still avilable to Confederate soldiers, Remants of several Confederate armies had gathered north of Fayettville to try to stop Sherman. For three days, March 19, 20, and 21, 1865, the confederates hung on to their position. On the first day, the confederates attacked the NOrth before Union troops could get in position. The second day was a series of small fights. By the third day, the Union had moved it's army around until part of it's troops got on the other side of the Confederate loine. THe Union attack pushed the southerners out of their shallow trenches. View Larger Map

Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807 and died on October 12, 1870 . He married Mary Cutsis and they had 7 children.
